1. Nara: deer, the Great Buddha and old wooden temples

The obvious first choice — Japan’s first permanent capital, with Todai-ji’s 15-metre bronze Buddha, Kasuga Taisha’s 3,000 lanterns and around 1,300 free-roaming deer in Nara Park. Half a day is enough for the highlights. Everything is in our dedicated Kyoto to Nara day trip guide.

2. Uji: the home of matcha

Just 20–30 minutes away: Byodo-in temple (on the ¥10 coin), riverside tea houses and centuries-old tea merchants. Perfect for a half day — see our tea ceremony and matcha guide.

3. Osaka: food, castle and neon

Kyoto’s noisy neighbour is a different world: street food in Dotonbori, Osaka Castle, Shinsekai and Kuromon Market. Many visitors stay in one and day-trip to the other — we compare them in Kyoto vs Osaka.

4. Himeji Castle

The « White Heron » is Japan’s most beautiful original castle and a UNESCO site. Take the Shinkansen from Kyoto (about 45–60 minutes); the castle is a 15-minute walk from the station. Allow 2–3 hours, plus the lovely Koko-en garden next door. Combine it with Kobe on the way back. Since March 2026, entry is ¥2,500 for non-residents of Himeji.

5. Hiroshima and Miyajima

A long but deeply moving day: the Peace Memorial Park and Museum in the morning, then the ferry to Miyajima and the « floating » torii of Itsukushima Shrine in the afternoon. With the Shinkansen (1 h 40 to Hiroshima), it’s very doable from Kyoto — and a guided tour removes the logistics.

6. Kurama and Kibune

Take the Eizan railway from Demachiyanagi to Kurama (30 min), climb past the mountain temple of Kurama-dera, then hike 1.5–2 hours over the ridge down to Kibune. In summer, restaurants serve lunch on platforms built over the river (kawadoko); in winter, finish with an onsen in Kurama.

7. Kobe

Wagyu beef, a lively harbour, the former foreigners’ quarter of Kitano and the Nada sake breweries. Easy to combine with Himeji.

8. Amanohashidate and Ine

On the Sea of Japan coast, Amanohashidate’s pine-covered sandbar is one of Japan’s « three scenic views », and Ine’s 230 funaya boathouses sit right on the water. Far (about 2 hours each way) — a guided tour or an overnight stay makes sense.

9. Lake Biwa and Hikone Castle

Japan’s largest lake and one of only twelve original castles, under an hour away on the JR line.

Organised tour or DIY?

  • ✔ Pros
  • No ticket or connection stress
  • Guide explains history and context
  • Efficient on long days (Hiroshima, Amanohashidate)
  • Hotel pickup on some tours
  • ✘ Cons
  • More expensive than trains for short hops (Nara, Uji)
  • Fixed timing — less freedom
  • Big-bus tours can feel rushed

Our rule of thumb: go DIY for Nara, Uji, Osaka and Kurama; consider a tour for Hiroshima, Himeji plus Kobe, and the Kyoto coast.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best day trip from Kyoto?

Nara is the best first day trip from Kyoto: close (35–45 minutes), cheap and packed with highlights. For a longer and very rewarding day, Hiroshima and Miyajima by Shinkansen.

Can you do Hiroshima as a day trip from Kyoto?

Yes. The Nozomi Shinkansen reaches Hiroshima in about 1 h 40. Leave by 8 a.m. to see the Peace Park and Miyajima and be back in Kyoto in the evening.

Is the Japan Rail Pass worth it for day trips from Kyoto?

Usually not since the 2023 price rise (¥50,000 for 7 days). It can pay off if your trip also includes Tokyo and Hiroshima within seven days; otherwise buy individual tickets or use an ICOCA card.

Can I visit Nara and Osaka in the same day from Kyoto?

Yes, it’s possible — Nara in the morning, Osaka in the afternoon and evening, then back to Kyoto — but it makes for a tiring day. If you have time, give each its own half day.
