Tokyo to Kyoto (2026): Bullet Train Price, Time, JR Pass & Day Trips

Tokyo to Kyoto is the classic Japan journey: 450 km in just over two hours on the Tokaido Shinkansen, with Mount Fuji out of the window on a clear day. It’s also a journey full of small decisions — which train, which ticket, whether a rail pass is worth it, which side to sit on. Here’s everything you need, updated for 2026.

How to buy Shinkansen tickets

  • Online: the official SmartEX app/website lets you book Tokaido Shinkansen seats in English and ride with your IC card or a QR ticket.
  • At the station: ticket machines (English menus) or JR ticket offices at Tokyo and Shinagawa.
  • Non-reserved cars (usually cars 1–3) are fine off-peak but crowded at weekends and holidays.
  • Large luggage (total dimensions over 160 cm) requires a seat with an oversized-baggage area booked in advance.

Is the JR Pass worth it for Tokyo–Kyoto?

Since October 2023, the 7-day Japan Rail Pass costs ¥50,000. A Tokyo–Kyoto round trip is about ¥28,000–29,000. The pass pays off only if you add more long journeys within 7 days — for example Kyoto–Hiroshima and back, or Tokyo–Kanazawa–Kyoto–Tokyo. Note that the pass covers Hikari but Nozomi requires a supplement.

Kyoto as a day trip from Tokyo?

It’s possible: leave Tokyo on a 6–7 a.m. Nozomi, arrive in Kyoto by 9, return on a 7–8 p.m. train. You’ll see one or two areas — Fushimi Inari and Higashiyama, typically. It’s a long and expensive day (around ¥28,000 in train tickets alone), so a guided day trip that handles everything is a good option if you want to maximise your time.
